Welcome to the Website of Amy Cheifetz, Soprano and Voice Teacher.
Amy Cheifetz is a soprano and voice teacher who has recently relocated
to Salem, Oregon after twelve years in New York City. While in NYC,
she performed extensively throughout the region, was a member of the
voice faculty at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, and
maintained a successful private vocal studio. Originally from
California, Amy has been performing in musical theatre, opera, and
professional choirs since the age of 10. She has earned degrees in
vocal performance from the University of California, Irvine (B. Music)
and the University of Washington (M. Music, D.M.A. abd). Her diverse
operatic performances include a solo recital of German and American
art songs at the Salle Cortot in Paris, France, Sophie De Palma in
Terrance McNally’s Master Class and Antonia in the innovative and well
received production of Cirque Boom NYC’s The Hoffmann Circus, a circus
opera based on Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann. One reviewer stated
that Ms. Cheifetz had a “powerful and stirring voice” with “a
wonderful dramatic sense and an impressive stage presence.” Her
operatic roles also include Musetta in La Bohème, Lauretta in Gianni
Schicchi, Despina in Così fan tutte, Papagena in Die Zauberflöte, and
the title role in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Patience.
Amy places great importance on making classical music accessible and interesting to
everyone and has had the joy of performing in opera and classical
music outreach programs with the Metropolitan Opera Guild and Song as
a Second Language. She has been an apprentice artist with Utah
Festival Opera and is a frequent guest artist at Middlebury College in
Vermont. While in Seattle, Amy was a regional finalist of the
Metropolitan Opera National Council Awards, and a soloist with both
the Pacific Northwest Chamber Chorus and the Lake Chelan Bach Fest.
But despite her love and success in classical music, her first love
was and always will be American Musical Theatre.
While in New York she
co-developed a cabaret “musical” called “The Boyfriend Back Home” with
Jeff Caldwell that they performed to rave reviews at the famous Don’t
Tell Mama’s in Manhattan. Her musical theater roles include Hodel in
Fiddler on the Roof , Winnie in No, No, Nanette, and (the role that
started it all) Duffy in Annie.
As a teacher, besides her twelve years
teaching at AMDA and in her private studio, she was a Visiting
Professor of Voice at Ball State University in Indiana and taught
dancers at Princeton Dance and Theater Studio in New Jersey. Amy gives
master classes in both classical and musical theater throughout the
U.S. Her students perform on Broadway (including Hairspray, Chorus
Line, Wicked), in National and International Tours (including
Hairspray, Grease, Oklahoma!, Fiddler on the Roof), and Regional
houses across the United States.
